Plane of Scattered Pasts
May 2 | 8:00 am - June 22 | 5:00 pm
Featuring sculpture by Heidi Schwegler and video installation by Quayola
Works in the exhibition offer new ways of thinking about ordinary objects and their inexorable fragmentation. Things break; they no longer do what they were designed or intended to do. Wear and tear are visual cues of a thing’s history, its former life of use and purpose. The works in this exhibition amend old or broken things by recasting and embellishing their materiality. Their original state, whether ordinary or monumental, is reoriented in terms of aesthetic value, a rumination on current and future brokenness, the perils and pleasures of aging, for objects and for all of us.
Heidi Schwegler, formerly based in Portland, now spends her time in Yucca Valley as co-founder of the Yucca Valley Material Lab. Quayola, an Italian artist based in London, uses video, computer software, and installation to explore the tension between real and artificial spaces and surfaces.
