Brenda Mallory: Gather Back
November 7, 2019 - December 21, 2019
For her first solo exhibition at Upfor, Brenda Mallory presents new 2D and sculptural work that address ideas of repetition, interference, and disruption in nature and human culture. Working in an array of materials both found and created, from linen firehose to kiln-formed glass, she often combines relatively simple components into complex wholes. This recent body of work also employs a specifically iterative approach. “For example,” Mallory explains, “I created a piece from rubber drive belts, then used that as a mold to create a similar object in cast paper, and yet another in cast glass.”
In addition to wall-hanging sculptures created from discarded materials, Gather Back features new works begun or created during three Oregon residencies: etchings from a Jordan Schnitzer Printmaking Residency at Sitka Center for the Arts, cast paper works from a C3:initiative + Pulp & Deckle Papermaking Residency, and glassworks from a residency at Bullseye Projects. The creation of works was funded in part thanks to a Career Opportunity Grant from the Oregon Arts Commission.
