When Eleni Touhouliotis left the island of Crete in 1974 for the United States, she brought with her a Greek cookbook one of her cousins wrote. She worked in a few cafes and saved her money until finally opening her own Greek restaurant in the Sellwood area six years ago. Then she opened a second one, Eleni’s Philoxenia, 112 NW Ninth Ave. 18 months ago. She prepares Cretian food with an abundance of olive oil, garlic and fresh vegetables. Her favorite dish is kalatsounia (spinach, fresh dill and green onions rolled inside a covering of philo dough).
We believe that great food can only come from great ingredients. Whenever available, we serve fresh organic vegetables. All the meat we serve is raised respectfully without hormones: Oregon Painted Hills beef, Carlton pork, Draper Valley free range chickens and new Zealand lambs. The olive oil we use is a very fine, first pressing from the island of Crete
