JAW: A Playwrights Festival, July 27-29

Portland Center Stage at The Armory proudly presents its 20th year of championing new plays and bringing invigorating theater to Portland with its JAW: A Playwrights Festival. Each summer, JAW welcomes a handful of playwrights to Portland — whose scripts have been selected from hundreds of submissions — to spend two weeks collaborating with directors, dramaturgs, actors, and other theater professionals to develop their plays in a supportive environment where their creative needs set the agenda.

The festival culminates in public staged readings of the JAW plays while they are still in development. Adding to the festivities is JAW’s Press Play series, offering a slew of events and performances from local artists, JAW’s Community Artist Labs, providing a chance to dig deeper with members of the JAW company, and staged readings of new scripts by this year’s Promising Playwrights, local high school students who have been selected to write and develop their own short plays alongside the professionals. Thousands of audience members join us annually to celebrate theatrical innovation and the enduring power of storytelling. Don’t miss JAW’s big 2-0!

FREE public readings of scripts in development will be presented at 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on July 28 and 29. The JAW kickoff event will be held on July 27 at 8:00pm, featuring the work of this year’s Promising Playwrights. For more information visit www.pcs.org/jaw.
